WILMINGTON, DE – Families looking for fun things to do with the kids during spring break will have plenty to choose from at the Delaware Children’s Museum (DCM) beginning Monday, April 21 through Sunday, April 27. Daily, hands-on programs, special guests and performances, discount deals, and soda geyser squeals will be featured as spring break fever collides with a very special milestone: The DCM’s fourth birthday! The end of April 2014 marks four years since the DCM opened its doors, and in celebration of turning four, the Museum will host a four-day long birthday bash of festivities. Beginning Thursday, April 24 through Sunday, April 27, families can wish the DCM a “Happy Birthday!” during museum-wide activities that include daily dance parties, listening to funny birthday-themed tales, decorating party hats, and going on a scavenger hunt to find four giant cupcakes hidden in the Museum’s exhibitions. As an extra special treat, the DCM’s official birthday — Thursday, April 24 — will feature additional celebrations: Early birds will be treated to discounted $4 admission to the DCM during its first hour of operation (9am-10am), and throughout the day guests will encounter outdoor soda geyser eruptions — reaching heights up to 30ft in the air!
And every day of the week, beginning on Monday, April 21, hands-on programs and activities centered around Earth Week will be featured. Putting the three Rs into use —Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle — ordinary empty water bottles will be transformed into extraordinary new creations. Families that help recycle by bringing in their own empty water bottles will receive $1 off general admission to the DCM (April 21-27 only). Bird lovers can also repurpose egg cartoons into take-home bird feeders throughout the week.
Spring break weekend, April 26 and 27, brings in a few extra special guests and performances to the Museum. On Saturday, April 26, get ready for a foot tappin’ good time as student performers from the saxophone studio of Harry Spencer (The Arts Academy at The Grand) delight families with a musical performance at 1pm. Next up, Blue Hens will descend upon the DCM for a special “Just Hatched!” meet and greet session with birds from the University of Delaware’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Students from UD’s Animal Science Club will bring along real versions of their mascot, the Blue Hen, and Araucana chickens (who lay green eggs). Also coming along for the trip will be newly hatched baby chicks that children can pet and hold. “Just Hatched!” will run from 11am-3pm on Sunday, April 27.
